Nickel Boys OTT Release: This intense American historical drama, is adapted from Colson Whitehead’s 2020 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Directed by RaMell Ross, the film chronicles the harrowing journey of two Black teenagers subjected to the brutalities of a reform school in the segregated South. The movie made its theatrical debut in December 2024, opening in select theatres across the country.
Although Amazon MGM Studios has not yet confirmed a free streaming release date, Nickel Boys is expected to eventually make its way to MGM+ and Prime Video, following in the footsteps of other Amazon MGM films like Challengers and The Beekeeper. For now, viewers can rent or buy the film digitally on platforms such as Prime Video and Apple TV+.
The story follows Elwood Curtis (played by Ethan Herisse), a hopeful young man whose dreams of college are shattered after he’s wrongfully sent to Nickel Academy for a minor mistake. There, he forms a bond with Turner (Brandon Wilson), a fellow student who becomes his source of strength and survival amidst the institution’s relentless abuse.
Set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement, the boys’ friendship serves as a beacon of hope and defiance against the oppressive system surrounding them. The talented cast also includes Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
After premiering at the Telluride Film Festival in August, the film earned widespread praise. The New York Times lauded Ross's ability to balance the film’s beauty with its brutal realities, while ELLE named it one of the best films of 2024. With nominations for Best Motion Picture Drama at the Golden Globes and two Oscar nominations — including Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay — Nickel Boys is already one of the most talked-about films of the year.
