Google DeepMind co-founder and CEO Demis Hassabis recently predicted that new AI models could not only help cure diseases but might even lead to the end of all diseases. Well, the statement by Demis is much appreciated by Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas, who called him a 'genius.'

Recently, while speaking during a 60 Minutes interview on CBS on Sunday, April 20, Hassabis shared that on average, it takes ten years and billions of dollars to design just one medicine, but with the help of artificial intelligence, now the time can be reduced from years to maybe months or maybe even weeks.

He also added that what people used to think about protein structures would change human health. "I think one day maybe we can cure all diseases with the help of AI," he said.

During the interview, the interviewee asked if AI would help in ending all diseases. The 48-year-old scientist answered, saying, “I think that's within reach. Maybe within the next decade or so, I don't see why not.”

The discussion of Demis impressed Aravind Srinivas, who reacted to a video of Hassabis' interview on X (formerly called Twitter) and said, 'Demis is a genius.' He went on to note that the Google DeepMind CEO should be given all the resources in the world to make it happen.

Meanwhile, the core product of Perplexity AI is an artificial intelligence that is powered by a search engine that competes directly with Google. Moreover, the AI startup is also planning to launch a new agentic browser to challenge Google Chrome.

AI did one billion years of PhD in one year

According to Hassabis, his current AI was able to complete a billion years of PhD time in one year by mapping 200 million protein structures.

Talking about the same to LinkedIn CEO Reid Hoffman, Hassabis said that they did a billion years of PhD time in one year. During the process it used to take a PhD student their entire PhD, as a rule of thumb, to discover one protein structure.
